NAMPA, Idaho (KBOI) - Officials in Idaho have released video of a dog attacking a police officer during a welfare check at a home in Nampa on Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Tim Randall with Nampa Police said the attack led an officer to shoot and kill one of the dogs. Neither officer was hurt.

The incident was caught on video by a small camera officers wear and activate during responses to calls, Randall said.

Police said two officers went to a residence Monday afternoon to check on two juvenile children.

When they arrived, police said they found the side door of the home partially open and were soon attacked by two large dogs. One of the offers fired his handgun and killed one dog.

One dog bit through an officer's gun belt and punctured a mace canister holder, Randall said. Neither officer was injured and the children were found to be unharmed in the home.

Nampa animal control officers identified the dogs as a Mastiff- pit bull mix and a Chesapeake - pit bull mix.

No charges have been filed and the incident is still under investigation.

Sgt. Randall said its the third time in five years officers have shot a dog while on a call, but this was the first time a dog was killed.

"It seemed like the officer felt really bad - he was shaking his head," said Larry Carver, who was at the home and described the pet as a family dog. "At the moment he panicked and started firing - and I don't think that was right."

Police say the officer acted accordingly.

"Our officers are allowed and trained to use deadly force when they feel their life is in danger, " said Deputy Chief Craig Kingsbury. "And in my opinion it's what this officer felt."

He said all Nampa police and animal control officers have been using the wearable cameras for the last two years.

Maybe the dogs were defending the home.
Cop could have closed the door to prevent them coming out after hearing the dogs barking ?
