Jun 28, 2023- Edmonton police are investigating a brazen daylight shooting in the city’s west end that is believed to be targeted.

At about 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the area of Ormsby Crescent following reports of several gunshots.

It was reported a man was out for a walk with his young family when a red Nissan Rogue pulled up behind them on Ormsby Crescent. Two masked suspects ran from the vehicle and began chasing the man while firing multiple gunshots at him.

The suspects chased the man through a green space between Ormsby Crescent and Ormsby Road East, while continuing to fire shots at him. The suspects then returned to the vehicle and fled the area.

Neither the man nor his family were injured by the gunfire.

The man is known to police and investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

Acting Insp. Eric Stewart, of the Edmonton police organized crime branch, said Wednesday the shooting was extremely dangerous and brazen.

“We can easily be talking about life-threatening injuries or homicides here today, if other children or families were out riding bikes or playing on the street, or someone was outside mowing the grass, etc., when this event took place,” he said.

Stewart said in his work with the organized crime branch, he is seeing an increased number of the “reckless, careless type of shooting events.”

“They’re happening more in broad daylight hours, in residential areas, where there’s family, potential for kids to be playing,” he said. “There used to be a little bit of respect level amongst these groups. But clearly by this and what we’ve seen, historically, in some other events, it seems to be gone out the window, which is concerning for us.”

One of the guns used in the weekend shooting has been linked to a shooting that occurred earlier in the year, Stewart noted. That shooting did not result in injuries and the investigation is ongoing.

He said while they have spoken to the man that was targeted, police are “not getting much co-operation” and are asking the public to come forward with any information they may have.

“Sometimes people are away, sometimes people haven’t looked at their video, they don’t think it’s going to be helpful because it’s not in the area of, but you never know what video is going to capture,” he said.

There were no reports of property damage so far but Stewart is hoping homeowners can look at their property.

“There’s a lot of residences that back onto that green space where the suspect and the complainant ran and you hear there’s about five gunshots that take place there,” he said. “We’re asking the public to take a look at their houses, especially in the back, that come on to the Ormsby green space to see if they can find any damage out there.”
