Police Cruiser Slams into a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro
The Lubbock Police Department continues to investigate a crash between a marked LPD Tahoe and 2011 Chevrolet Camaro around 6:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of South Loop 289 and University Avenue. Police say the driver of the Camaro was going south on University as the LPD Tahoe was going north with its emergency lights and siren on, according to LPD. LPD tells KCBD the driver of the Camaro was turning left, or east, onto the S. Loop 289 access road and did not yield the right-of-way of the LPD Tahoe. The vehicles then collided in the intersection. Both drivers suffered moderate injuries. Monday afternoon LPD provided further information. According to officials, the officer was following an ambulance and had the green light at the intersection. LPD says the crash happened in the main lanes of traffic, with the vehicles coming to rest near the turnaround lane. Police gave this statement when releasing the dash camera video to KH: “Due to the amount of misinformation and confusion related to the officer-involved crash on Nov. 3, we felt it was important to release this dash-camera footage to show the officer’s actions leading up to the crash and the crash itself. The officer observed a traffic violation on University Avenue that occurred behind an ambulance also traveling northbound on University. The officer was attempting to catch up to the individual to make a stop with both his sirens and lights enabled and had a green light, when a red Camaro crossed in front of the officer and the cars collided.” |

Re: Police Cruiser Slams into a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro
People just don’t give emergency vehicles the right of way, or the respect they deserve anymore. I’ve seen lots of videos where civilian vehicles just go on about their way and the emergency vehicles have to drive in between and around cars that had every opportunity to pull to the right and stop. If the cop or ambulance were rushing to the aid of their mother or their child, would they want the responding vehicle to drive through an obstacle course wasting valuable time? |

Fail to yield right of way turning left at a controlled intersection. Officer's speed wasn't horribly excessive and he had the green light.
