Pickup Truck Hits a Trooper on a Traffic Stop at Over 80 Mph

This accident occurred in 2006. I tried several searches for this accident and kept getting “0 results”, so I do apologize if this is a repost.

At 3:00 a.m. on April 4th 2006, Trooper “R. H.” had just made a traffic stop along I-10 near Siegen Lane in Baton Rouge. He pulled the driver over for driving 75 mph in a 50 mph construction zone.

Just 60 seconds into the stop, a pickup truck driven by “A.B.” traveling at least 80 mph slammed into the trooper and the vehicle he had just pulled over.

Amazingly, the trooper was able to radio for help. Once help arrived, “A.B.” was placed in the back of “R.H.’s” patrol car while other officers attended to the injured officer. While in the back of the patrol car, “A.B” can be heard making 2 phone calls to his girlfriend informing her he had just been in an accident and would be going to jail for a long time. On his 2nd call, he tells his gf that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel and feared the guy he hit might be dead and if the cops searched his truck they would find drugs and a gun he had just purchased.

The trooper suffered 2 broken legs and a cut to the head and has since made a full recovery and is now back at work.

“A.B.” was sentenced to just five years probation after entering guilty pleas to first-degree vehicular negligent injury and possession with intent to distribute drugs, prosecutors said. Prosecutors say Trooper “R.H” agreed to the sentence of probation so that ”A.B.” could remain employed and pay an undisclosed monthly restitution to the trooper. If ”A.B.” fails to make those payments, he could then be ordered to prison.

Side note: In searches I made online, I found what seemed to be a link to a blog entry from someone claiming to be a former classmate of “A.B.” saying that “A.B.” has gone to jail, but after clicking the link to the story, the entry was missing, so I was unable to verify that fact.

Re: Pickup Truck Hits a Trooper on a Traffic Stop at Over 80 Mph

Not sure how much it would have helped, but here in CA the troopers got the the passenger side for traffic stops. Seems unsafe to be on the traffic side of the car, especially in the dark...
