At about 5:26 p.m. on October 2, 2021, Paterson police received multiple 911 calls from the 600 block of Madison Avenue about a man walking on a roof and trying to break into a residence.

Officers and medical personnel responded near 620 Madison Avenue and found Jose Gonzalez, 41, of Paterson, at the exterior rear of the residence. He appeared injured and incoherent.

Sgt. Angelo Gencarelli and Officer Rocco Galiano tried to aid Gonzalez. He was agitated, and officers briefly handcuffed him so they could secure him and get him onto a stretcher.

Medical and police personnel placed Gonzalez on the stretcher and took him to St. Joseph's University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:22 p.m. The death remained under investigation.
