Off-Duty Chicago Officer Areanah Preston Shot Dead on May 6, 2023
Chicago Police Officer Aréanah Preston, 24, was shot and killed outside her home in the 8100 block of South Blackstone Avenue in Chicago's Avalon Park neighborhood at about 1:42 a.m. on May 6, 2023. Preston, who was assigned to the 5th District, was off duty but still in uniform after finishing her shift. Prosecutors said a group traveling in a stolen Kia approached Preston during an armed-robbery spree after she parked outside her home. Shots were exchanged, and Preston was killed at the scene. The getaway car was later found burned in Greater Grand Crossing. Joseph Brooks, Trevell Breeland, Jakwon Buchanan and Jaylen Frazier were charged with first-degree murder. Brooks pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 55 years in prison on April 2, 2026. Prosecutors alleged that Brooks fired the fatal shot. The cases against Breeland, Buchanan and Frazier remained pending as of April 2026.
