Kheyanev Littledog, 19, of Midland was shot after police say he reached for a gun in his waistband after being confronted by police.

According to Midland Spokeswoman Sara Bustilloz at around 7:30 p.m. officers responded to a suspicious man in the 500 block of East Industrial Avenue.

When officers got on scene the man appeared to be causing a disturbance and had a gun in his waistband.

According to a press release from the City of Midland, dash cam footage and eyewitness statements reveal that Littledog reached for the gun when he was shot by the two officers.

MPD says that a Littledog was found with a second firearm in his backpack at the time of the shooting, though he was not licensed to carry a firearm.

Texas Rangers and DPS are conducting a third-party investigation of the shooting. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave as is normal protocol, according to Bustilloz.

The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as 26-year-old Aaron Renz and 31-year-old Aaron Trevino.

Renz has been with MPD for 1 year and 10 months. Trevino is a K-9 officer who has served with MPD for 7 years and 10 months.

Bustilloz says that the City plans to release part of the video footage of the shooting later this week.

She also added that the officers were not equipped with body cams and that they are in the middle of getting them, but that investigators were satisfied with the footage provided off of the vehicles.

The City of Midland has received proposals on body cameras and will choose a vendor at an upcoming council meeting.

I'm sure even the police has the most basic video editing software to enhance the lighting. And I'm thinking the resolution we just saw is not the native resolution.
