At 9:42 p.m. on May 29, 2021, Ji drove into his ex-wife, Zhang, and her classmate, Liu, from behind on Jinluan Lane in Qinhuai District, Nanjing. He ran Zhang over and struck a passer-by, He. Ji then left the car, stabbed Liu and slashed Zhang while she was pinned beneath the vehicle. He chased Liu and stabbed her again before returning to the car and repeatedly running over Zhang as bystanders tried to stop him.

Ji and Zhang had divorced in October 2018 but continued living together. Ji beat her when he was drunk, and Zhang moved to Nanjing for work in September 2020. Ji followed her there in January 2021 after she refused to reconcile and repeatedly waited in a car near her workplace. During the attack, Qiu Shaochun, known nationally as "Nanjing fat brother," was stabbed three times while intervening. Ji ended the attack by cutting his own throat, but he survived. Seven people were injured besides Ji, including three who suffered grade-two serious injuries. Zhang was assessed as severely disabled. Police characterized the attack as intentional homicide. In August 2025, the Supreme People's Court approved Ji's death sentence and lifelong deprivation of political rights.

You can see the guy who looks like a sumo wrestler with the glasses and stomach wound get stabbed, the knife is visible for a moment as the perp thrusts it into his gut. Being a Good Samaritan and interfering in domestic violence can get you killed, more cops seem to die from 'domestic' calls than any other violence. I didn't see the perp trying to strike other pedestrians with his car in the videos but the description seems to say he went postal and was running non-combatants down.
