A fatal beating last year at Chicago's downtown federal prison was sparked after one inmate called another a snitch, federal prosecutors revealed for the first time.

The attack occurred March 11 as the two inmates were attending a class in the chapel of the Metropolitan Correctional Center about their releases, authorities said.

Jason Katz and other inmates began teasing Jason Tolen for "snitching" to guards about another inmate's "access to laundry items," prosecutors said in court papers this week.

Tolen dared Katz to call him a snitch again, authorities said. It's unclear whether Katz responded, but Tolen walked across the room and punched Katz in the head about 20 times, causing a massive brain hemorrhage and immediate death, according to prosecutors.

A South Bend native, Katz, 32, was serving a 9-month sentence for the illegal sale of a firearm when he was killed. He had two children.

"I want him [Tolen] to spend the rest of his life in prison," Katz's mother, Diane, said Wednesday in a telephone interview. "I want him to suffer just like I am and Jason's children are suffering."

Tolen, 20, is scheduled to go on trial on second-degree murder charges Jan. 20 in U.S. District Court in Chicago.

He was serving a 21-month sentence for possession of six stolen firearms at the time of the offense. He faces a possible life sentence if he is convicted of the slaying.

Although a federal investigation last year showed violence is endemic at the Cook County Jail, prosecutors say they cannot recall the last time an inmate was killed at the 26-story Metropolitan Correctional Center, primarily a holding facility for federal inmates awaiting trial. It is at 71 W. Van Buren St.

The government is seeking to block the defense from presenting testimony at trial that calling an inmate a snitch likely would provoke violence in prison.

Giving someone a life sentence in prison pisses me off. I say kill the fuckers, a bullet is cheap. It costs close to 30k a year per prisoner. Rapists, murders, child molesters, those that prey on the weak all should get a bullet.

Sometimes people are jailed innocent and i hate to see someone got killed for something he didn't commit.

Although there are enough clear cases of murderers and rapists that DO deserve death above costly imprisonment.

Here in the US, we have had numerous people freed by DNA tests, only to be convicted felons previous to the charge that they were originally convicted of, as well as returning right back to prison for murder from which they were freed by DNA tests in the first place. I have a hard time believing a truly innocent person would get convicted of murder. When I say innocent, I mean law abiding citizen. Let them take a bullet.

Yeah. Let's just shoot everyone who goes to prison, regardless of the severity of their crime.
