Malcolm Orr Sentenced to 35 Years in Jail After Shooting at Cop 8 Times
Video recorded from a camera in a South Carolina police officer's glasses shows him getting shot four times last year as he tells a dispatcher, "tell my family that I love them." Estill Officer Quincy Smith survived his wounds, and Malcolm Orr was sentenced to 35 years on Wednesday at Hampton County Courthouse. Orr had been found guilty of attempted murder and possession a weapon while committing a violent crime. Officer Smith was responding to a call on New Year's Day 2016 in Estill regarding someone trying to snatch groceries from customers. Smith spotted Orr walking from the store and ordered him to stop, but Orr instead fired eight times. Bullets broke two bones in the officer's arm, severed a vein in his neck and passed through his upper torso. "If but not for the grace of God and some very good doctors, this would not only have been a murder case, but a death penalty case," said 14th Circuit Solicitor Duffie Stone, the prosecutor in the case.  The Solicitor's Office released the video of the shooting on Thursday. The camera in Smith's glasses was purchased by the officer on Amazon. During his closing arguments, Stone emphasized that Officer Smith was fired upon "not once, not twice, not three times, or four, or five, or six, or seven, but eight times." n the video, the emergency dispatcher delivers encouragement to the severely wounded officer as he lay outside his patrol car. In a message to the dispatcher, Officer Smith says, "tell my family that I love them." Dr. James Dunne, an emergency room physician, testified that a bullet completely severed a vein in Smith's neck. The jury deliberated for less than 45 minutes before handing down the guilty verdict. Orr was given the maximum sentence. |
