Long Beach officers responded to the 1900 block of Harbor Avenue after a 911 caller reported a man shooting at people near 20th and Harbor. The caller described him as a white man in his 20s wearing a black jacket, a blue football jersey with white numbers, blue jeans, and black shoes.

Officers found the man on the west sidewalk and ordered him to get on the ground. During the encounter, officers said he had a gun and told him not to reach for his waistband or the gun again. The man was shot and told officers he had been hit.

Officers kept giving commands while the man was on the ground. They told him to crawl toward them, get on his stomach, put his arms out, and cross his ankles before moving in to take him into custody.

While on the ground, the man said he wanted to die and said he was trying to commit suicide. He also said he made the call about people shooting so officers would come there.
