On Nov. 19, 2024, Long Beach police officers responded Code 3 to a possible weapons call in the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue, near a church. The call involved a Hispanic man with a shaved head, wearing a sweater and pants.

Officers contacted the man and told him to keep his hands out of his pockets. They asked what he had behind his back and in his hand, and repeatedly asked if he had a gun. The man said he had made the call.

An officer later called him Brandon. Officers talked with him for several minutes, told him they were there to help, and asked him to put his hands on his head, lie down on the sidewalk, or walk toward them. Officers also told him they did not want him to hurt himself.

After more commands, officers told Brandon to keep his hands up and not reach for anything. Shots were fired. Officers moved in, took him into custody, requested fire personnel, searched him, and began medical aid, including chest compressions.
