Golda Barton called 911 in Salt Lake City on September 4, 2020, seeking a crisis-intervention officer to take her 13-year-old son, Linden Cameron, to a hospital during a mental health breakdown. Barton warned officers that Cameron, who had Asperger's syndrome and a sensory processing disorder, was frightened of police.

Cameron ran from officers down an alley behind his home. Officer Matthew Farillas fired eleven shots at him. Cameron survived with injuries to his intestines, colon, bladder, stomach, shoulder and ankles, as well as nerve damage, and required long-term care. Cameron was unarmed, and no weapon was recovered. Police initially said he had threatened people with a weapon, but that account was later retracted. Barton had told a dispatcher that he might have a toy gun.

Salt Lake City agreed to a $3 million settlement with Cameron's family in September 2022 without admitting liability. In August 2023, Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill found that Farillas' use of force was unjustified but declined to file criminal charges, citing the burden of proof required for prosecution.

(CNN)A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured after being shot by a police officer in Salt Lake City on Friday night, according to his mother.
G. B. said that her son L. C., who has Asperger syndrome, experienced a "mental breakdown" earlier in the day. It had been her first day back at work in nearly a year, and L. C. was having trouble coping, she confirmed to CNN in an email.

G.B. also confirmed she called the police and asked for a crisis intervention team to help her manage the situation and get her son treatment.

"I said, 'Look, he's unarmed. He doesn't have anything. He just gets mad and he starts yelling and screaming,'" G.B. told CNN affiliate KUTV about her call to police. "He's a kid he's trying to get attention. He doesn't know how to regulate."

When police arrived, G.B. said her son ran away. She told KUTV that she heard someone yell "get down on the ground" three times, followed by several gunshots.

"Why didn't they tase him? Why didn't they shoot him with a rubber bullet?" G.B. told the station. "He's a small child. Why don't you just tackle him? You are big police officers with massive amounts of resources."

Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Keith Horrocks said in a news conference on Saturday that officers had been called to the area because a boy was having a "psychological episode and had made threats to some folks with the weapon."

The boy fled and as police chased after him, one officer fired their weapon and struck the child, Horrocks said. Officers provided medical aid to the boy until medical personnel arrived, Horrocks said. He was then taken to a local hospital, according to police.

L.C.'s injuries include damage to his shoulder, ankles, intestines, bladder and colon, as well as nerve damage, G.B. told CNN.

It is not clear whether the boy actually had a weapon, or exactly what threats police were said to be responding to.

G.B. told CNN her son was unarmed. Detective Greg Wilking, a spokesperson for the Salt Lake City Police Department, told CNN on Tuesday that he could not speak specifically to whether the boy had a weapon or "what the officers' perceived threats were," and that those questions would be determined by the investigation.

"While the full details of this incident are yet to be released as an investigation takes place, I will say that I am thankful this young boy is alive and no one else was injured," Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a statement, according to KUTV.

Again, why maybe we don't need to send guys armed only with guns and no training to a mental health episode. That's NOT usually the good option.

The lazy eye confuses me. When face to face, I lean in to the one eye that shoots off to the left side, seemingly looking at the sky. Do they only see 1/2 of me? I guess it's like walking and chewing gun.

Wishful thinking, Trump ceased Federal funds for diversity and sensitivity training for law enforcement. There's going to be more of this kind of stuff in the very near future, like Nov 4, '20
