Las Vegas Deputy Sergeant Shoots Machete-wielding Man
On January 6, 2026, Deputy Sergeant Mark Ruesch, assigned to the Office of the Ex-Officio Constable for the Las Vegas Township, returned to the 6600 block of South Sandhill Road to complete an eviction process he had started the day before. Ruesch tried to contact the apartment occupant, later identified as 46-year-old Victor Vondrasek, but could not reach him or open the front door. An apartment complex employee brought a ladder and climbed to the second-floor balcony to help. As the employee climbed onto the balcony, Vondrasek crashed through the sliding glass door armed with a machete and slashed the employee in the neck. Ruesch heard screams, climbed the ladder, and when he reached the top, Vondrasek tried to stab him with the machete. Ruesch fired one round, striking Vondrasek. Vondrasek remained combative with Ruesch until LVMPD patrol officers arrived and took him into custody. Medical personnel took Ruesch, Vondrasek, and the employee to local hospitals. Ruesch and Vondrasek had non-life-threatening injuries. The employee had critical injuries and remains hospitalized. Vondrasek was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges including attempted murder with a deadly weapon, battery on a protected person, battery with a deadly weapon, and resisting a public officer with a deadly weapon.
