Los Angeles police shot and killed a man who was reportedly swinging a metal chain at people and drivers in South L.A.

Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call around noon near Kalmia Street and 103rd Street.

Multiple callers reported that a man was armed with a metal chain and was swinging it at pedestrians and passing vehicles, according to LAPD.

When officers arrived, they encountered the man armed with the chain and gave him commands to surrender, which he reportedly ignored.

LAPD said they used 40mm less-lethal rounds in an attempt to get the suspect into custody, but it had no effect.

Officers opened fire after the man reportedly continued to advance toward them.

The man was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said. He was later identified as 56-year-old Hugo Polanco.

The chain was taken in for evidence. No officers or bystanders were hurt.
