A Korean student was kicked in the side of the head in an unprovoked attack by two men who approached him and struck up a conversation on the Gold Coast.
Security cameras recorded the disturbing assault and robbery, which took place outside a karaoke bar in the Scarborough Street mall late Sunday.
The footage shows one offender chatting with the students, as the other hovers behind the group before swiftly kicking his victim unconscious.
The offenders then search the student’s pockets and steal his phone and wallet.
Police have described the unprovoked attack as “sickening”.
“At approximately midnight two Korean nationals had just exited the karaoke bar… they sat on the footpath for a short period of time where two male offenders have approached them,” Detective Acting Inspector Mark Proctor said.
“One of these male offenders distracted the two gentleman while the other stepped behind him and delivered a swift kick to side of the head.
“The victim was rendered unconscious immediately and the other victim was chased off.”
Insp. Proctor said he was keen to get the offenders “off the streets”, and compared the attack to coward-punching.
“This is taking that to a whole new level… it’s very sickening,” he said.
“If anyone recognises these people if they could contact Crime Stoppers immediately.”
All of the men involved were aged in their early twenties, and the two offenders were travelling within a group of up to five people , police believe.
The student was taken to hospital for treatment and his injuries were not life-threatening, Insp. Proctor said.
