Jason Smith Shot by Spokane Police on Domestic Violence Call, October 12, 2015
Spokane police shot 36-year-old Jason M. Smith shortly after midnight on October 12, 2015, at 4118 E. Longfellow Ave. in the Hillyard neighborhood of north Spokane. Smith initially called 911 and said his father was suicidal and that guns were in the house. His father then called and said Smith was intoxicated, had damaged the house and had assaulted him. Officers arrived to find Smith sitting in his pickup in the driveway. Within about five minutes, police said, Smith drove the truck into a patrol car and pushed it into a second patrol car. Senior Police Officer Christopher McMurtrey and Officers Joseph Matt and Stanley Stadelman fired at Smith. He was wounded but survived, and his injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Officers provided prolonged first aid in the street before he was hospitalized. Smith later faced three assault charges related to the patrol cars and two domestic-violence charges. Spokane police released more than an hour of body-camera footage in December 2015. |
