James Rakeem Pierce, 28, was killed during an exchange of gunfire with Charleston County sheriff's deputies in Ravenel, South Carolina, on May 7, 2023. The shooting occurred about 3:45 p.m. during a traffic stop in the 4900 block of Savannah Highway.

The Charleston County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Evan Cubbage stopped the vehicle and asked Pierce, who was in the passenger seat, to get out. Pierce opened fire, striking Cubbage three times. Cubbage and Deputy Alexander Hodge, who had arrived as backup, returned fire. Pierce died at the scene from a gunshot wound. The coroner did not specify where he was struck.

Cubbage suffered multiple gunshot wounds to both legs. Hodge applied tourniquets before Cubbage was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released about five hours later. The female driver was not injured. She was detained and turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
