A man who is serving two years' jail for a brutal attack on an Illawarra bus driver which was captured on security video, may have his stay significantly increased.

The Crown is appealing the sentence handed down to James Joseph Elphick in Wollongong District Court on August 5 this year on grounds it was inadequate.

A Department of Public Prosecutions spokesperson confirmed the Crown was preparing submissions for the Court of Criminal Appeal.
