Chau Martika Duncan, 34, was shot and killed by three Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers on Jacksonville's Northside on Oct. 11, 2026.

At about 9:15 a.m. on Oct. 10, 2026, a 911 caller described a Black woman in a purple jumpsuit waving a gun in the air in the 10600 block of Monaco Drive. Officers did not find her. At about 10:12 a.m., officers responded to the 10600 block of Briar Cliff Road East after another caller described a Black woman wearing purple pointing a gun at him and his dog. Officers again did not find her. At 10:16 a.m. on Oct. 11, a caller described a Black woman in a purple sweatsuit pointing a gun at a white man near Mar Vic Lane and Dunn Avenue. Four officers arrived at 10:22 a.m. and identified her as the woman sought the previous day.

Officers E. Cobian and Joshua Curtis encountered Duncan yelling profanities and throwing objects at officers. She carried a couple of bags and repeatedly reached into them. Officers ordered her at least four times to show her hands. They also ordered her to stop walking and stop reaching into her bag. She continued walking away. Officers followed her about a quarter mile. One officer stated that he believed she had a gun. Their plan was to approach behind a patrol car, with Cobian driving slowly and Curtis and Joshua Boykin walking behind it. A neighbor watched officers follow Duncan past her house toward the end of the street and told her boyfriend she believed they were going to shoot her.

At 10:34 a.m., Duncan reached Mar Vic Lane and Biscayne Boulevard, pulled a gun from her bag and fired once at officers. The bullet struck the driver's side door of the patrol car they were using for cover. Boykin, Curtis and Bailey Herrin fired simultaneously, striking Duncan several times. She fell and dropped the gun. Officers handcuffed her before paramedics provided emergency aid. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue pronounced her dead at the scene. No officers were injured.
