An inmate at a maximum security prison in the US was forced to jump one storey to safety after every door in a wing opened and a group of men armed with crude knives set upon him.
The incident occurred at Florida's Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on June 14, the Miami Herald reports.
Surveillance footage of the attack shows two armed inmates step out of their cells and immediately begin to look around moments after their doors simultaneously opened.
The inmates appeared ready for the doors to open, which has led to speculation that the men were aware they were about to be let out.
Moments after the doors open another camera shows the two inmates corner their apparent target, Kenneth Williams, who makes a dash for freedom before jumping over a rail and falling to the floor one storey below.
Footage taken from the lower level shows Williams writhing on the floor in pain as another inmate stands over him for protection.
Williams suffered a fractured vertebrae and a broken ankle.
Prison authorities believe the attempted attack may have been sparked by gang rivalry.
Williams was in jail awaiting trial on charges of trying to intimidate witnesses who testified against two gunmen accused of killing one of Willimas' rivals and his ten-month-old son.
Prison authorities are investigating what caused the cell doors to open.

Was wondering something similar myself esp after seeing the screw downstairs didn't seem that concerned and stayed in his control room and just kept looking at those up on the balcony....
