A 21-year-old Dominican national, previously deported and with a criminal record, shot a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Manhattan during an attempted robbery. The agent, despite severe injuries, returned fire and wounded the assailant, now in NYPD custody.  Mora Nunez had crossed the border illegally in 2023, had multiple prior arrests, and was under deportation orders. The incident occurred close to midnight on July 13, when the agent and his female companion were ambushed by two assailants on a moped. During the confrontation, Mora Nunez allegedly shot the 42-year-old federal agent in the face and forearm, prompting the agent to return fire. The exchange left Mora wounded and in custody, while his accomplice fled the scene and remains at large. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the federal agent was stable following surgery on Sunday, 14 July. The DHS revealed that Mora Nunez illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in April 2023 during the Biden administration. He was reportedly released due to overcrowding in border detention facilities and issued a court appearance notice, a policy known as "catch and release." His criminal record in New York and Massachusetts includes at least four separate arrests. According to police sources, Mora was twice arrested in August 2024, first for assaulting a pregnant woman and later for threatening another migrant with a machete. In November 2024, he was again taken into custody for violating a protection order, and a bench warrant for his arrest was issued in January 2025. At the time of the July attack, Mora was also reportedly wanted on kidnapping and weapons charges in Massachusetts, according to law enforcement briefings received by local investigators.   · |
