Heavily Armed Gang Ambushes Cash-in-transit Vehicle and Blowing It Up
South Africa. A scene of military-style precision and chaos unfolded on the Newlands Expressway on the late afternoon of Friday, March 27, 2026, as a heavily armed gang ambushed a cash-in-transit vehicle directly outside the entrance to Midway Mall. Around 18:10, the armored truck was intercepted and boxed in by two luxury white SUVs. According to witnesses, at least 12 men leaped from the vehicles, wielding automatic rifles including AK-47''s and R5s. As shoppers nearby scrambled for cover, the gunmen opened fire on the cabin of the cash van to disable the guards. Minutes later, two massive explosions rocked Newlands West, heard for kilometers. The suspects used commercial explosives to rip open the vehicle's vault. The gang frantically loading bags of cash into their getaway cars while smoke billowed from the mangled wreckage of the van. Two security guards were seriously injured; one suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while the other was injured by the force of the blast. Both remain in stable but critical condition at a local hospital. A bystander was treated for minor injuries caused by flying glass fragments. One of the vehicles used in the heist, a white BMW, was found abandoned in the nearby KwaMashu township. Records show the car was hijacked earlier this month in Gauteng. Police have secured DNA samples and high-definition CCTV footage from Midway Mall. Investigators are reportedly focusing on one suspect who was filmed without a mask during the loading of the cash. While the exact amount has not been disclosed, industry sources confirm a "substantial multi-million Rand sum" was stolen, intended for the mall’s ATMs ahead of the month-end rush. No arrests have been made yet, but a massive manhunt is underway across KwaZulu-Natal. |

I'm surprised those guards survived that if they were sitting in the van. Was that cash that was scattered around on the ground?
