Gwinnett County police fired Sgt. Michael Bongiovanni and Officer Robert McDonald after bystander videos recorded their treatment of Demetrius Hollins during an April 12, 2017, traffic stop over a license-plate issue. One video showed Bongiovanni punching Hollins, 21, in the face as he left his car with his hands raised. Hollins was taken to the ground and handcuffed. McDonald then arrived and kicked or stomped Hollins in the head while he was lying face down. Both officers were terminated within a day or two of the stop.

A jury later convicted McDonald of aggravated assault, battery and felony violation of his oath as a public officer. He was sentenced to 10 years of probation, including 11 months of house arrest. Bongiovanni pleaded no contest to aggravated assault in 2019 and received six months in a work-release program followed by five months of house arrest. A judge also barred him from working in law enforcement again. In 2022, Gwinnett County agreed to pay Hollins $400,000 to settle his federal civil lawsuit before trial.
