Foot Pursuit Ends in Officer-involved Shooting in Logan Heights
San Diego police confirmed reports of an officer-involved shooting in the Logan Heights area Monday afternoon. At about 3:20 p.m. an officer was in the area of 35th Street and National Avenue in the Logan Heights area when he attempted to stop a 30-year-old male for what appeared to be a narcotics violation, said SDPD Captain Tom Underwood. That was when a foot pursuit began between the officer and the suspect. During the chase the suspect produced a handgun, while refusing orders to drop the handgun the suspect raised the gun and that was when shots were fired, explained Underwood. Two officers fired their service weapon striking the suspect at least one time, his injuries are considered non-life-threatening, confirmed Underwood. No officers were injured during the incident. The weapon recovered at the scene from the suspect was confirmed to be a real handgun, Underwood said. The suspect does have a criminal background and is believed to be a San Diego resident, officials said. Police asked people to avoid the area as they investigate. National Avenue will be closed in both directions while they continue the investigation late into the night. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. |
