FLORIDA: Homeless Guy Fires Gun and Shoots Deputy While Being Tased

Trespasser refused to show his hands and officer fired a Taser at him. While getting juiced, he shoots three times from a revolver in his pocket and strikes a deputy. Trespasser is in jail and his dog went to the shelter.

TAMPA, (April 14, 2024) — Newly released bodycam video shows the moment a Hillsborough County deputy was shot by a suspect Sunday morning.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said at about 10 a.m., deputies were patrolling Beacon Meadows Park, located off Gunn Highway in the Greater Carrollwood area when they found a man, identified as 32-year-old Anthony Carpenter, who they trespassed at the park Saturday.

Deputies tried to get Carpenter to leave again. He continuously told officials he feared for his life and that he didn’t want to get hurt or be arrested because he didn’t commit a crime, despite officers trying to de-escalate the situation.

The suspect is known to the community and has a very aggressive dog. After 25 minutes, the suspect refused to obey their commands to show them his hands, which he kept concealed in his coat pockets, and to leave the park.

When deputies called for animal control for the dog, Carpenter walked into the field and officials drew their tasers, which were ineffective due to the jacket he was wearing.

According to officials, the deputies then shocked the suspect with their tasers, but while on the ground, the suspect fired a revolver three times, hitting one of the deputies, identified as Deputy Kerr Craige, 33, on his shoulder mic, which saved him.

“How did I get hit?” Craige said in the bodycam video. “Something hit me.”

Deputy Craige was not critically injured. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he has since been released, according to the sheriff’s office. No other deputies were injured.

“I come to you here today angry, but very thankful and very blessed,” Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer said in a press conference Sunday afternoon.

Carpenter was arrested and was found with a firearm and a knife in his coat. He is facing charges of resisting an officer with violence, armed trespass, and three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer with a firearm.

“Today’s situation could have ended in tragedy. Thankfully, our deputy narrowly escaped serious injury despite the careless actions of this suspect,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “Not only was the deputy’s life endangered today, but the lives of those around him were also at risk.”

I suppose technically, if he was clenching the gun with his finger on the trigger it might explain the first shot. But I'm certain the other two shots were strictly under his control. No doubt a good public defender will raise the argument though.

Because he has a very agressive dog that caused trouble before.
