San Luis Obispo police on Thursday arrested a man they say walked into a downtown business, began a conversation with an employee and then punched her for no apparent reason.

At about 11:30 a.m., police say Justin Edmond Pard, 20, walked into the Flip Flop Shop on the 800 block of Higuera Street and began chatting with the lone employee as he appeared to browse around the store.

In video surveillance footage released by the police department, the man identified as Pard walked up and sucker punched the 23-year-old female employee in the face. He then yelled profanities at her and fled the store.

The victim, who is not being named, suffered a bloody nose and a bruised face.

Pard was later spotted by a business owner at Barnes and Noble, where he was held until the victim could identify him as the attacker.

While searching Pard, police found a 10-inch kitchen knife concealed in his sweatshirt pocket, according to a news release.

He was booked on suspicion of assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

On Thursday evening, Pard remained in San Luis Obispo County Jail in lieu of $9,500 bail.
