Re: Female Cop Fights Female Tweaker
Five years ago the Bullhead City Police Department was investigating a shooting involving a Mohave County Sheriff Deputy that occurred in Golden Valley. At approximately 9:15 a.m., the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) responded to the Maverick Country Store, 5031 Highway 68, in Golden Valley for a report of an erratic female walking inside the store with a gun in her hand. The responding deputies contacted Brenda Kay Thomas, 51 of Golden Valley, who was uncooperative and combative with police. They were able to take her into custody for disorderly conduct with a weapon and resisting arrest. When a MCSO detective escorted her outside in handcuffs, Brenda Thomas somehow grabbed the detective’s duty weapon out of its holster. When the detective felt her grab his gun and tried to stop her, she discharged the weapon and shot him in his hand. Another MCSO deputy on scene tased Brenda Thomas, who was no longer armed with the deputy’s weapon, but continued to be combative. Brenda Thomas was not injured in the shooting. The deputy was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries to his hand. Brenda Thomas faced additional charges of attempted second degree homicide. She wasbe booked into the Mohave County Jail in Kingman. Brenda Kay Thomas reached a plea agreement with the Mohave County Attorney's Office. She pleaded guilty to Aggravated Assault on a law enforcement officer. In exchange for her guilty plea, the original, more severe charge of Attempted Second-Degree Murder was dropped, along with separate felony drug possession charges that arose during her booking. The judge sentenced Thomas to 2 years in the Arizona Department of Corrections, followed by a period of supervised probation. The detective shot in the hand was identified as Sgt. Dave Coffin. The bullet from his duty weapon severely injured his hand, ultimately resulting in the partial amputation of his pinky finger. He made a full operational recovery and was later cleared to return to duty. |
