Federal Grand Jury Indicts Man Accused of Shooting Officer Outside QuikTrip

A Tulsa man accused of shooting a police officer outside of a midtown QuikTrip earlier this year is now indicted by a federal grand jury.

John Terry Chatman, 34, is already charged with three counts of shooting with intent to kill, possession of a firearm after a previous felony conviction, obstruction and driving under suspension and with an improper tag.

The federal grand jury has now charged him with a slew of felonies, including possession of a firearm and ammunition, obstruction of justice by attempting to kill a witness and carrying, using and discharging a firearm during a violent crime. If convicted, he faces up to 50 years in prison and $750,000 in fines.

The indictment alleges that Chatman tried to kill a Tulsa police officer with a 32-caliber revolver after previous felony convictions.

“This indictment alleges that John Terry Chatman violated federal laws when he shot and wounded a Tulsa police officer with a firearm that he illegally possessed," said United States Attorney Trent Shores.

"We will seek to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt and hold him accountable in a court of law. Like any other shooting victim of a felon with an illegal gun, the wounded police officer in this case deserves justice.”

Body cameras captured the July 3 shootout at the 51st and Harvard QuikTrip. Police say two officers stopped Chatman's minivan after discovering the tags didn't match the vehicle.

Chatman was uncooperative, according to officers on the scene, and after calling in backup to get him out of the vehicle police say he opened fire, shooting one officer in the leg.

Police fired back, shooting Chatman in the chest. He spent several weeks in the hospital recovering before being booked into the Tulsa County Jail.

Should have riddled that van with machine gun fire like the capture of Bonnie and Clyde.

You rock Kelly! Thanks for the help with the video!

I might also add that in all of the articles I’ve read on this incident, there is no mention of the girlfriend being charged with anything. If I had been the arresting officer, I would at the very least have charged her with obstruction of justice or interfering an investigation for refusing to cooperate with the officer’s commands. I would have also just let her sit in the doorway and given her a few pepperball rounds, caused she pissed me off and I’m just mean like that.
