On December 9, 2025, two on-duty Chicago police officers were investigating a call about a stolen vehicle near 5700 N. Washtenaw.

The officers saw a dark colored sedan pull alongside the stolen vehicle and saw two people trying to enter the stolen vehicle. The officers approached and ordered them to stop.

One person ran away on foot. The other tried to get back into the dark colored sedan, and a struggle followed between that person and an officer.

The officer fired once while the person was driving away, striking that person. The officer was briefly dragged by the vehicle, which then hit an unoccupied parked vehicle.

The person who was shot was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. The officer was also taken to a hospital in good condition. Two weapons were recovered at the scene.
