FATAL: Crash Victim Randomly Becomes Insane & Attacks Officer

May 26, 2020. The incident happened when a Jacksonville sheriff's officer responded to a traffic accident on J. Turner Butler Boulevard. His encounter with the driver quickly turned deadly. The video, which begins with the officer checking on the man's wellbeing and ends with his death, is only nine minutes.

The man told the officer he had fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed his car. The car is shown with severe damage in the video.

He said he was uninjured other than some chest pain, and he was exhausted from driving to Jacksonville from Savannah.

When asked if he was taking any medications, the man replied: "I do take some medications but it's just ... I just got tired. I haven't slept much lately, but I'm on my normal medications."

The officer questions the man's strange demeanor, asking him: "Are you okay? Is this your normal?"

The video shows that after a couple of minutes of talking with the officer, the man runs at him, yelling.

The officer uses a stun gun multiple times, but the man continues to get up.

He yells at the officer: "You better kill me. You better. You better."

The officer called for backup.

The officer calls dispatch again after the first time he uses the stun gun. "He just lost his mind. I mean he tried to attack me," he said.

The man then starts to yell, "I got a gun! I got a gun!"

While he was reaching into his car, the officer continues to tell him to stop what he was doing.

He didn't comply. The officer then shoots him twice.

The man appears to die quickly after that.

Obviously paranoid/mentally ill. Too bad it turned out like this when are too many out there that are violent thugs that survive that deserve to be plugged with lead to be put to sleep forever.

Pretty freaky how the driver snapped like that.

Poor cop's adrenaline was off the charts after the shooting.

Yea i agree, some are alleging that the crash was a suicide attempt, but it failed so he just went crazy and wanted to die

I agree. I just thought of the same theory, because...
  • he would not answer questions regarding why he was out driving, etc.
  • he allegedly flipped personalities so quickly
  • yet he was mentally cognizant enough to pretend going for a gun in order to trigger suicide by cop

Yeah that's my read on it as well. Tried to kill himself with the one vehicle accident but it failed then he figured he could have the cop finish it for him.

61-year-old John Allen Dunaway III. A preliminary look into court records in Duval and St. Johns counties does not show a criminal history for the 61-year-old. Also no gun was found inside his car.

Just went batshit crazy.

Re: FATAL: Crash Victim Randomly Becomes Insane & Attacks Officer

People need the fortitude to /self privately and without harming or traumatizing others. This is a good argument for a legal suicide pill. Maybe he planned his suicide "accident" to scam a life insurance payout to his beneficiary. When that failed, he decided, "Fuck the life insurance, I'm going."

I hope the life insurance industry isn't paying out for suicide by cop.
