East Brunswick Officer Strikes Pedestrian on Route 18
On August 1, 2021, East Brunswick Police Officer Mitchell Ngai was on duty, in uniform, and driving a marked patrol vehicle on State Route 18. He was responding to a reported motor vehicle crash in the southbound lanes. At about 3:35 a.m., Officer Ngai was traveling northbound near the reported crash when his patrol vehicle struck Julius Filep, 55, of Edison, who was walking in the roadway in front of 260 State Route 18. Medical aid was given to Filep, and he was taken by ambulance to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 4:13 a.m. The fatal encounter remained under investigation, and the case was to be presented to a grand jury after the investigation was complete.
