Dutch Police Shoot Man With Knife in the Leg on Hobbemaplein, The Hague, 2017
A man carrying a knife was shot in the leg by police on Hobbemaplein in The Hague on April 12, 2017. Witnesses called police after seeing the man smash windows while carrying the knife. Officers found him on the square and repeatedly warned him before firing two warning shots. They then shot him in the leg. The man was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said it remained unclear why he was carrying the knife. The Rijksrecherche opened an investigation, as it does whenever the use of an officer's service weapon results in an injury. |

Neatly done in the circumstances, the officers were able to assess the situation and conclude the suspect was unlikely to be a further threat once disabled and therefore took the disabling shot. Clean, neat and tidy, and totally appropriate for this situation as opposed to a hardened, trained terrorist where fatal action is often the necessary. The suspect is going to have a fair old limp after that, which, hopefully, will act as a reminder that if you play stupid games you win stupid prizes...  |
