Drive-by Shooting in Englewood Leaving One Man Wounded
Video released Tuesday shows a drive-by shooting in Englewood and police said they believe a small child was in the car as the shooter fired out of the passenger window, leaving one man wounded.
Detectives worked the case overnight since the shooting and made "significant progress," in the investigation, according to Detective Capt. Timothy Torell, commander of the city's criminal investigations bureau.
The surveillance video shows a light-colored car pull into the parking lot at the Westmoor Gardens housing complex, near Building #6, before the gunman fires several shots at a group of men standing in the lot around 5:45 p.m. Monday, according to police. A 25-year-old city man was shot in the foot and suffered non life-threatening injuries.
"At least one individual in that group was specifically targeted as a result of an ongoing dispute between several city residents over the last few months," Torell said in an email.
Based on interviews, detectives are confident that at least four people were in the car along with a "very small child," the captain added.
"We suspect that the guardian of that small child was unaware that the shooting was about to take place, but we need to talk with that person as soon as possible," Torell said. "The fact that there was a child in the car and the nature of the shooting being so depraved, makes the need for this case to be resolved extremely urgent."
Police urged people in the car to come forward and identify the shooter.
Investigators also hoped to have the security footage enhanced by an FBI lab to reveal more details, including a license plate, according to Torell. A security camera shows the muzzle flash of a gun and people diving for cover.
Authorities previously described the car as a light-colored vehicle, possibly a white Toyota Camry. It was last seen heading west on Slocum Avenue.
