Dexter Reed, Jr. Killed in Police Shooting Near 3800 W. Ferdinand
On March 21, 2024, five Chicago police officers assigned to an 11th District tactical unit stopped Dexter Reed, Jr. near 3800 W. Ferdinand Street for purportedly not wearing a seatbelt. After the stop, multiple officers surrounded Reed's vehicle and gave verbal commands. Reed did not comply, and officers pointed their firearms at him. Gunfire was then exchanged. Video footage and initial information indicate Reed fired first, striking an officer in the forearm. Four officers returned fire about 96 times over 41 seconds, including after Reed exited his vehicle and fell to the ground. Reed was struck multiple times, taken to a hospital, and later pronounced dead. A gun was recovered on the front passenger seat of Reed's vehicle. A formal request was sent to Superintendent Larry Snelling recommending that Chicago police relieve four officers of their police powers while the investigation is pending.
