Charleston County Sheriff's Deputy Evan Cubbage was shot three times and passenger James Pierce, 28, of Walterboro, was killed during a traffic stop near Ravenel, South Carolina, on May 7, 2023. The shooting occurred shortly before 3:45 p.m. in the 4900 block of Savannah Highway. The sheriff's office said Cubbage spoke briefly with the vehicle's occupants and requested backup. When Deputy Alexander Hodge arrived, Pierce opened fire, striking Cubbage. Both deputies returned fire, and Pierce died at the scene. Hodge and the female driver were unhurt. The driver was detained and turned over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Cubbage received hospital treatment and was released around 9 p.m. that night. Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave while SLED investigated. The sheriff's office released Cubbage's patrol-car dashcam recording on May 12, 2023. It shows deputies approaching the stopped sedan, taking cover during the encounter and a person on the ground beside the passenger side. |
