On January 22, 2023, Deptford police officers responded to a home on Fox Run Road in Deptford, Gloucester County, after a 9-1-1 caller said Daniel Nevius, 55, of Sicklerville, was pointing a firearm at civilians there.

Officers approached the residence on foot. They reported that Nevius pointed his rifle toward them. Officer Luke Ivey fired one round from his service weapon at 1:21 p.m., striking Nevius.

Emergency medical personnel responded and tried to aid Nevius. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:55 p.m., and his rifle was recovered.

A state grand jury finished deliberations on March 4, 2024, and voted no bill, meaning no criminal charges would be filed against Officer Ivey.
