Defendant Percy Phillips Tasered After Outburst in Courtroom

Percy Phillips, 45, was found guilty of assault and robbery after the death of a homeless man in 2002 and was appearing in Jefferson Circuit Court accused of threatening a police officer who testified against him in that case.

He had also been accused of spitting at a judge.

But when the prosecutor, John Balliet, started to outline his case in a competency hearing yesterday, Phillips jumped up from his seat and knocked over the table in front of him.

The defendant was grabbed and restrained by a deputy - who quickly released him and jumped out of the way when a colleague, Deputy George Thornton, yelled "Taser", before using the weapon.

The electric charged knocked Phillips over but he was able to walk away from the court unaided.

His defence lawyer, Jay Lambert, said that he thought the situation had been handled appropriately.
