Grand Rapids, MI - Newly released police body camera and dash camera video shows the moments a 51-year-old man opened fire on Grand Rapids police officers during what authorities describe as a “high-risk traffic stop,” prompting officers to return fire and kill him.

The shooting happened Saturday on Tremont Boulevard near Covell Avenue NW on the city’s west side. According to the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD), the incident stemmed from a domestic violence call earlier in the day.

A woman initially contacted police around noon, and later called 911 again just before 4 p.m. to report that the man was threatening to shoot himself.

About 45 minutes after the second call, officers located the man’s vehicle and initiated a stop. The video shows officers ordering the driver to turn off the car.

As the driver’s door opens, the man immediately begins firing a semi-automatic handgun toward officers, according to the department.

GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said the suspect fired an estimated 8 to 12 rounds in the direction of police.

Three officers returned fire, discharging at least 30 rounds combined.

Police said no fewer than three bullets struck the suspect, killing him. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The video also shows extensive damage to one police cruiser.

Investigators say the cruiser was hit both by the suspect’s gunfire and by rounds fired by one of the officers.

The driver of the police cruiser is right-handed and had to shoot through the windshield while simultaneously trying to shield himself from incoming bullets. The officer then moved behind the cruiser to reload.

“This happening in such a short period of time is out of the norm,” Winstrom said, adding that he believes his officers took every reasonable step to deescalate the situation.

Police have not publicly identified the man.

Winstrom said he had been the subject of "several” previous domestic violence calls.

He was going to shoot himself but chose to go for the suicide by cop route to put the burden on someone else.
