Customers Overpower Robber Using a Sawn-off Bolt-action Rifle at a McDonalds

Mulgrave, A bandit who robbed a McDonald's restaurant at gunpoint was overpowered by staff and customers.

Melbourne court heard on Monday that Tyler Forsyth, 20, threatened his 3 victims with a sawn-off bolt-action rifle at the family restaurant in Mulgrave last November.

Prosecutor Malobabic said Forsyth pointed to firearm, which was not loaded but in working order, at the manager and 2 customers who all feared for their lives.

Malobabic told the Court that Forsyth stole $700 from the till and demanded the wallets of the customers he had ordered onto their knees at gunpoint.

She told that the 2 customers then approached Forsyth from behind, tackled him to the ground and subdued him.

Forsyth later made full admissions to police and said he committed the armed robbery to repay an old drug debt from people who drove him to the restaurant.

His lawyer said Forsyth told police in a record of interview he “felt like a dickhead” for committing the offence.

Forsyth also apologised for his conduct, which he admitted had made his victims feel that their lives were at risk.

Forsyth, supported in court by his father and other relatives, had been a drug user but in custody since the offence he had taken effective steps towards rehabilitation.

Forsyth pleaded guilty to four charges including three of armed robbery.

Judge Lawson remanded him in custody for him to be assessed for a youth justice centre order.

I was waiting for the damn employee to take the gun, jeez he needs some survival instincts.

He had the perfect opportunity, as soon as he placed the register down the robber takes both hands off the gun. Split second he would have had that gun pointed right at the robbers head. Hell, I saw a few other times he could have grabbed the gun as well, with practically no risk.

I guess that's why he works at McDonalds.

I agree, but I was more expecting the one civilian to have grabbed the gun.

Practically no risk to try a grab whilst the robber is standing right next to the gun? I don't think so; a fumbled grab for the gun was a bad idea. They waited for the perfect opportunity: When the robber was already down and unable to reach his weapon quickly at all. Smart move by all involved, no-one has to be a hero AND a martyr.
