OBITUARY

On October 8, 2020, police responded to a call at gas station in Stockton, CA, just before 7 a.m. on report of a man inside the store harassing customers and threatening to throw a bottle of wine at an employee. When police arrived on scene, they found Sutherland inside the store and asked him to go outside, to which he complied.

Sutherland is asked questions about what’s going on and whether he had taken drugs. Sutherland, who is sitting on the ground, can be heard admitting that he used cocaine earlier that morning; he then jumps up and attempts to run away but is tackled and handcuffed by police. Several officers held Sutherland down, where he fell unconscious, and later died in hospital.

Forensic pathologist, Dr. Omalu found that Sutherland died by Restraint Asphyxiation which could be seen from the body cam video provided by Stockton PD. The video shows one of the officers laying on Sutherland’s back and pressing his arm into the side of his neck while he is repeating “I Can’t Breathe”. There is also a baton being used to “restrain” him.

The family has filed State, county, and federal lawsuits. Sutherland’s mother is also demanding the officers involved be fired from the force and charged.

The San Joaquin County coroner ruled Shayne Sutherland’s death an accident.

The family had a second autopsy done that concluded he died as a result of restraint asphyxiation.
