In-Custody Death - Enie "Teddy" Serrano (33)
There are the two body camera videos as well as a citizen's cellphone footage of deputies arresting Ernie Serrano, who died in law enforcement custody, at a Stater Bros. market in the Jurupa Valley neighborhood of Rubidoux on Dec. 15, 2020. This was a fatal interaction with sheriffs that saw Ernie battered and bloodied before becoming unresponsive. Cellphone footage attached at bottom of screen. Police Press Conference regarding the incident Serrano's family and their attorneys, Humberto Guizar and Christian Contreras, announced legal action against the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, claiming the 33-year-old's death amounts to murder and the officers killed him with a smile on their faces. The family's legal team isn't buying the preliminary autopsy report -- concluding Ernie's death was the result of acute methamphetamine intoxication. Guizar claims body cam video shows he died from asphyxiation, so they want the officers charged with homicide. Ernie's sister says even if he was on drugs, he didn't deserve to die. |

It is going to be hard to prove murder in this case if the coroner states that he died of a meth overdose. Unless they can prove that the medical examiner is incompetent.

Deputies weren't charged for his death. The coroner's office ultimately ruled that he died in the hands of another person & that the deputies' actions contributed to his death by methamphetamines overdose.

On the one hand, though cops are not medical personals-surely you can tell when someone becomes unresponsive, it's so obvious and they seem to wait too long for any meaningful medical intervention to be effective. But I am still in favor of the cops because in the end if you are drug-addicted cancer on society-you reap what you sew-so oh well.
