Edwards died of a heart attack June 15, 2019, at age 22 after being tased six times by Maquoketa police officer Mike Owen and sat on for more than 12 minutes by Owen and Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy Steve Schroeder. Both officers were cleared of wrongdoing. The officers had been trying to arrest Edwards for simple assault following a domestic dispute.

Police said an autopsy showed Edwards had methamphetamine, ecstasy and marijuana in his system when he died.

In October 2019, O'Brien filed a civil suit on behalf of Edwards' estate against Owen, Schroeder, Maquoketa, Jackson County and another officer who came on the scene and cuffed Drew's right hand, which had been stuck under his body as Owen and Schroeder continued to pin him to the ground.

In addition to wrongful death, negligence and use of excessive force, the filing also claimed loss of consortium, substantive due process and violation of open records laws.

Officer Mike Owen was named as a defendant January 21, 2020 in an amended filing. The City of Maquoketa, Jackson County, Maquoketa Assistant Police Chief Brendan Zeimet and Jackson County Chief Deputy Sheriff Steve Schroeder were named as defendants when the lawsuit was filed Oct. 23 in U.S. District Court. see attached pdf

The city of Maquoketa and Jackson County paid a combined $4.5 million to Drew’s sister and her family in September 2020 to settle a civil suit filed for Edwards' death, but the heartache the loss brought to his family runs deeper than any amount of money can resolve, she said.

Drew’s cousin was hit especially hard by Edwards' death, killed himself Feb. 17, 2021.

The officers involved were later cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in Edwards' death.

Yet another idiotic druggie getting himself killed because just complying is SO EFFING COMPLICATED. Good thing there was no melanin involved this time so, thankfully, no-one's going to care.
