Re: Crazy Police Activity Compilation
https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com...og-identified/ Man killed by San Diego police after setting fire to dog identified The police officer who shot and killed the man is assigned to the canine unit and has been on the force for 10 years San Diego County sheriff’s officials on Tuesday released the name of the man who was shot and killed by San Diego police officers last week after he reportedly bashed cars with a metal rod before burning a police dog and setting himself on fire inside a North Park adult store. The man was identified as 33-year-old Saul Sandoval Chavez. He died Sept. 16 at a hospital shortly after the shooting. The officer who fatally shot Chavez was identified as Kyle Lehr. Lehr, who is assigned to the canine unit, has been with the San Diego Police Department for 10 years, officials said. Ryder the police dog was released from an animal hospital later that same day after being treated for burn injuries and was recovering at home, a police spokesperson said. He is expected to return to work. Ryder’s handler and two other police officers suffered burns to their hands and arms during the incident. Officers had responded to a call around 9 a.m. about a man bashing car windows with a hammer and also swinging it at people as he walked down the street in the area of El Cajon Boulevard and Oregon Street. Officials later clarified he was wielding a metal rod. Four cars were damaged. Officers chased the man into Adult Emporium, a few blocks away on 30th Street and Polk Avenue, and he barricaded himself in the business. Police tried to negotiate with the man, but he refused commands to exit the store. Police said they fired beanbag rounds during the standoff before sending in Ryder. “A K‑9 was deployed, and the suspect ignited the device, setting the K‑9 on fire,” sheriff’s homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said in a news release. “The man then moved toward the front door with the incendiary device, at which point an officer-involved shooting occurred. One officer fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect.” The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the officer-involved shooting under a countywide memorandum that calls for an outside agency to investigate police shootings. After the sheriff’s Homicide Unit completes its investigation, the case will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officer should be criminally charged. The San Diego Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the shooting. |
