A man suspected in two robberies and an attempted robbery, was captured Friday Aug 2 2008 after a high-speed chase that led law enforcement officers into Osceola County and back into Brevard County before stop sticks disabled the man's vehicle on Interstate 95.

Kelly Shane Boyd, 32, 248 Croquet Ave. N.E., Palm Bay, was being held Friday evening in the Brevard County Detention Center on charges of armed robbery with a weapon, armed robbery with a firearm, aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated assault with a firearm, petty theft, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, robbery by sudden snatching, fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving.


Boyd is also facing additional charges from Palm Bay police and the Brevard County Sheriff's Office, officials said.

Cmdr. Steve Wilkinson of the West Melbourne Police Department said an armed robbery occurred about 6 p.m. Thursday at the Wendy's restaurant, 2650 W. New Haven Ave., in West Melbourne. A man showed a weapon described as a knife or razor and demanded cash. The man also was in possession of a handgun, Wilkinson said.

No one was injured, and the man left the store with a small amount of cash. Witnesses saw the tag and vehicle the suspect left in, a silver or gray two-door Mitsubishi Eclipse with a Georgia tag, which was later linked to Boyd, who police said matched the description given by a witness in a photo lineup.

An arrest warrant was issued for Boyd, who also was suspected in an armed robbery Friday morning at a Walgreens store, 3280 Minton Road, Palm Bay, in which a man brandished a knife.

Police said the vehicle was spotted by a West Melbourne officer who followed the vehicle west on U.S. 192 past the county line into Osceola County. Speeds at times exceeded 100 mph.

During the pursuit, sheriff's deputies flattened at least one of the vehicle's front tires with stop sticks. The vehicle turned around and headed back east on U.S. 192 and got on I-95 northbound, where authorities were able to finally make a stop and capture Boyd. Units from the sheriff's office -- including the helicopter -- and Palm Bay and Osceola County were involved.


Boyd was taken to West Melbourne Police Department, where he admitted to attempting to rob a woman just before 11 p.m. Tuesday at a Regions Bank ATM in West Melbourne, Wilkinson said.

He said Boyd admitted to approaching the woman after she made a withdrawal from the ATM, but that she sped away in her car before he could reach her. She was able to keep her ATM card, but dropped the cash and receipt, but Boyd denied getting them, Wilkinson said.
