Detroit. A routine arrest took a chaotic and violent turn early Tuesday morning, resulting in a suspect being hospitalized after her smartphone exploded inside her pocket during a police altercation.

Officers responded to a domestic disturbance call involving an agitated 28-year-old woman. After initially complying and being placed in handcuffs, the suspect was escorted to a patrol vehicle. However, the situation quickly escalated, the instant the officer removed the handcuffs to transition her into the vehicle, the suspect's behavior shifted dramatically.

She immediately launched a physical assault against the arresting officer, exhibiting violence. As the enraged woman charged, the officer deployed a Taser to neutralize the threat, the high-voltage electrical current subdued the suspect, but it triggered an unexpected and dangerous chain reaction.

Witnesses report that the massive surge of electricity standardly delivered by the Taser short-circuited the lithium-ion battery of a smartphone stored in the woman's front jeans pocket.

The electrical overload caused the battery to rapidly overheat, or cook, expanding within seconds. "There was a loud sissing noise followed by a sudden blast," said an investigator at the scene.

"The device literally exploded inside her pocket, tearing through the fabric of her clothing.

"Emergency medical personnel immediately treated the woman at the scene for minor puncture wounds from the Taser probes, alongside second-degree chemical and thermal burns on her thigh caused by the exploding phone.

The officer sustained minor injuries from the initial assault but did not require hospitalization. The incident is currently under routine internal review, and the suspect faces multiple charges, including assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.
