Cop Struggles Hits & Arrest Suspect That Took Away His Taser During Arrest

CONWAY, SC - Horry County police have determined one of their officers was justified in beating a suspect after they fought over the patrolman's Taser.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports that police released video of the arrest.

It doesn't show the fight over the Taser, but it does show officer Charles Dean wrestling and hitting Krishmer Bessent.

Police spokesman Sgt. Robert Kegler says Dean had every right to fight back against Bessent because he could have been defenseless if shocked by the Taser.

Authorities say Dean saw Bessent walking down a road in Little River on May 18 and was trying to arrest him on an outstanding warrant for a bar fight.

A phone number for Bessent has been disconnected and it wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

Bessent, 30, was wanted on assault and battery charges when officers found him on Bellamy Road in Little River on May 18.

According to an incident report, Bessent complied with Officer Charles Dean when he asked Bessent to put his hands on the patrol car, but after informing Bessent he was under arrest, he tried to run away.

Horry County Police Sgt. Robert Kegler says the officer attempted to take hold of Bessent when he began elbowing the responding officer in an attempt to escape from his custody.

The responding officer unsuccessfully deployed his Taser, both slipped on the ground in an attempt to gain custody, and the Taser fell out of his hands.

The report says Bessent grabbed the Taser and shot it at Dean, but missed. Dean, saying he "feared for his life," hit Bessent on the back of neck before hitting him in the face a number of times.

Police released the 20-minute dashcam video Friday showing dean punching Bessent, as well as kicking him once in the stomach as Bessent was being placed into handcuffs.

In the video, one officer is shown taking the Taser out of Bessent's hand and tossing it on the ground.

Bessent was detained on the ground until an ambulance arrived to treat him for injuries.

As a result of the incident, Bessent was also charged with assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest.
