In my opinion the cop deserved it. Breaking into a home without a warrant when there was no imminent threat was foolish and probably violated the homeowner’s constitutional rights. I want to support the police, I really do. But they have gone way too far in recent years in enforcing egos. All training focuses on tactical combat and NO training on the Constitutional rights of the citizens. The thin blue line gang is worse than all the others.

IMHO, many (not all) small town cops just have a propensity to fall into the "Dep. Barney Fife" career model, mostly because of a lack of advanced professional training. Usually due to small town budgets. Thermopolis has 7 officers for just under 3,000 residents.

These poor cops typically lack the skills and competence to handle anything beyond congenial encounters. When confronted with hostility, they tend to lose their shit pretty quick. I suspect this guy's extensive military background is probably the only thing that saved his life.
