Christopher Lee Mercurio Shot by Deputy, Santa Clarita, January 11, 2023
Christopher Lee Mercurio, 50, was shot twice by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy outside Macy's at Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita, California, on January 11, 2023. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. January 12. Deputy Lorena Gonzalez had responded to a trespassing call. The California Department of Justice said Mercurio refused to leave, threatened to kill people and repeatedly struck the left side of Gonzalez's head. She backed away and warned him several times that she would shoot. He continued advancing, and she fired two shots about five seconds apart. Both struck his chest. Mercurio then walked toward the store entrance and lay down, where deputies provided aid. He was unarmed. In March 2025, the state Department of Justice concluded there was insufficient evidence to charge Gonzalez and issued policy recommendations to the sheriff's department. |

How did she ever pass the physical test?! I see a fair amount of overweight officers and wonder if they ever had to pass the physical stress course, (you know the run, jump, hang, climb and run some more kinda thing) or if they even have that requirement anymore. |
