A Canberra police officer is facing an internal investigation after CCTV showed him pepper-spraying a dog chained up in a man's backyard.

The plain-clothed Federal Police officer was performing a search on an unoccupied home in the suburb of Griffith last month when he confronted the dog.

The video shows the animal, which was securely chained in the backyard, barking at the officer, who is seen jumping backwards despite being several metres away.

The policeman then pulls out a bottle of capsicum spray and squirts the dog, which quickly cowers out of shot.

The officer is later seen appearing to dance near the dog then throwing a stick at it as other officers seemingly laugh.

The owner has now made a formal complaint to police.

"It is cowardly for anybody to treat an animal in this way," the owner's lawyer Peter Woodhouse told the Canberra Times.

"The fact that it is a police officer supposedly executing his duty is appalling."

The owner of the pet was being investigated for dangerous driving at the time.

A spokesman for the AFP said the matter was currently subject to an investigation, and ACT Policing does not condone cruelty to animals.

The issue isn't that the spray didn't reach the dog. It's that the cop shouldn't be something as fucking juvenile as taunting a dog in the first place. Fucking idiot.

Didn't see any taunting. Didn't really care whether the pepper spray reached the dog or not. There's no law violation here...the dog reacted and got sprayed. Here in the state's, he'd probably been shot if the officer felt threatened. This is a non issue...it's a dog.

Unfortunately, dogs don't have brains that have the capacity to know if they're being taunted as most animal lovers would have you believe. This dog was "thinking". Intruder... Bark Bark Bark... Pain... Bark Bark Bark... Squirrel... Bark Bark Bark...

Now that I'm retired, I often walk around my yard in my underwear barking at the neighbors, the birds, the mailman, the grass, and other humans. There's nothing wrong with barking...I'm a better man now that I bark. Woof! Bark! Gerrr!
